Driver was transporting illegal liquor?

Local media reports said the accused driver was drunk at the time of the accident and it is suspected that he was also illegally transporting liquor as visuals from the site showed beer cans in the SUV while some lying scattered near the car wreckage.

They also claimed that the SUV was being chased by the State Monitoring Cell (SMC). However, the agency, which keeps a watch on illegal liquor sale in Gujarat, denied reports that its team was pursuing the vehicle.

"We would like to clarify that none of our teams were chasing that SUV. It was just a rumour spread by some people," SMC's Deputy Superintendent of Police KT Kamaria said in a statement.

A BharatJanpaksh Channel News report, citing sources, said the registration plate of the SUV was also forged and belonged to another car.

3 dead, accused in custody: Police

Meanwhile, a senior officer said the accused driver was in police "custody" and it is being investigated if he was speeding because of being involved in some illegal activity.

Giving details, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic (West), Neeta Desai said the SUV was coming from the Vaishnodevi Circle and hit the other car when the latter was making a turn towards Rajpath Club Road.

The deceased have been identified as SUV occupant Om Prakash (37), the other car's driver Ajit Kathi (32) and its occupant Manish Bhatt (52), both residents of Viramgam town in Ahmedabad, she said.

Om Prakash and the SUV's driver Rajendra Sahu, who was seriously injured, are residents of Rajasthan, she said.

"The SUV going towards Bopal rammed into another car, which was coming from Bopal side and taking a right turn towards the Rajpath Club Road. Two occupants of the car and one person in the SUV died on the spot. The SUV's driver was undergoing treatment at a hospital," said Desai.

She said that police and fire brigade teams rushed to the scene after the accident and tried to rescue the victims from the wreckage.
