The Madhya Pradesh High Court has ruled that a marriage between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman was not valid under Muslim personal law. The court also dismissed a plea for police protection to register an inter-faith marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Justice Gurpal Singh Ahluwalia said the marriage between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman would be deemed as an "irregular" marriage under Muslim law even if they are married under the Special Marriage Act, according to a Bar and Bench report. "As per Mahomedan law, the marriage of a Muslim boy with a girl who is an idolatress or a fire-worshipper, is not a valid marriage. Even if the marriage is registered under the Special Marriage Act, the marriage would no longer be a valid marriage, and it would be an irregular (fasid) marriage," the high court said in its order on May 27. The Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and four others in the murder case of Dera manager Ranjit Singh. In 2021, a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court found Ram Rahim and other accused in the case guilty of Singh's murder, sentencing them to life imprisonment. Ram Rahim's counsel said after the hearing, "Punjab and Haryana HC acquits Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in murder case of his ex-manager Ranjit Singh." The Sirsa-headquartered sect chief, who is also serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples, is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, Haryana.  Among the skeletons to tumble out of the bureaucratic closet following the Pune crash case is the checkered past of Sassoon General Hospital's Dr Ajay Taware who is currently in custody for allegedly switching out the blood samples of the 17-year-old minor driver alleged to be responsible for the death of two IT professionals. In particular, it is a 2023 recommendation letter written by NCP MLA Sunil Tingre that has raised eyebrows. This is the second time Tingre's name has come up in the case. Earlier, he was alleged to have ensured the juvenile gets favourable treatment from police. Dr Ajay Taware's name was reportedly mentioned in connection with a kidney racket in 2022. With approval, Dr Samir Kamat will hold charge of DRDO till May 31, 2025. "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Defence for extension in service of Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D) and Chairman, Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) for a period of one year from 01 .06.2024 till 31 .05.2025. or until further orders, whichever is earlier," an official order issued by DoPT read. Earlier, in a move that has taken forces by surprise, the Government on Sunday approved a one-month service extension to Indian Army chief Gen Manoj Pande up to June 30. Government sources said that the successor of General Pande would be appointed by the government to be formed after the results on June 4.

 Bhavesh Bhinde, the accused in Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case has been sent to police custody till May 29 by magistrate court. Thane: A 31-year-old man lost both his legs after he fell off the footboard of a running local train at Kalwa railway station on Saturday. The victim, identified as Jagan Jangle, slipped onto the tracks after a thief attacked his hand with a stick to snatch his mobile phone. According to Government Railway Police officials, Jagan was travelling from Dadar to Kalyan. The incident occurred when the train crossed Thane station at about 8.30pm. Jagan got up from his seat and decided to stand on the footboard of the train. "He was holding his mobile in his left hand. As soon as the train reached the Kalwa station, a thief attacked his hand with a stick to snatch his phone. Jagan fell from the rain and slipped into the tracks. Both his legs were completely mutilated," said a GRP official. After the incident, passengers of the train immediately informed the GRP officials.  MUMBAI: Gangster Ejaz Lakdawala, formerly associated with gangster Chhota Rajan, filed an application earlier this week before a special court designated under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA) He challenged his transfer from Taloja prison to a high-security barrack in Arthur Road jail, asserting that the transfer was executed without adhering to due process of law, rendering it invalid. Lakdawala has several cases registered against him for extortion, attempted murder, and rioting. The MCOCA court earlier this year sentenced Lakdawala to life imprisonment in a 1996 gangland killing, where he was involved in a murder allegedly out of rivalry with fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar.
